Captain of the S/V Skipping Stone

The crew of the skipping stone

"Captain Andrew's seagoing experience and knowledge of the Caribbean can offer you a unique and memorable sailing experience."

Captain Andrew was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. During his high school years he spent his weekends and holidays commercial fishing the west coast from Mexico to Alaska, until he found sailing. At 16 he was lucky enough to secure a crew position aboard Sterling Hayden’s schooner Wanderer, captained by Omar Darr, sailing from San Francisco to Mexico. Several other sailing voyages to Hawaii and back relieved the tedium of high school. At 22, fortuitous circumstances allowed him to began his dream of sailing adventure; a circumnavigation. Aboard his 48’ Phillip Rhodes cutter Mistress he sailed to Hawaii. Unfortunately, this racing cutter (a TransPac winner) was a ludicrous cruising boat so he traded her for the 1909, 65’ William Hand gaff ketch Seafarer, aboard which he cruised the South Seas for five and a half years. The nine and a half year circumnavigation did little to sate his passion for the sea and he became a charter boat captain in the eastern Caribbean. After five years, seeking a change, he began operating charter, corporate and private luxury motor yachts, voyaging from the East Coast to the Mediterranean, Caribbean and the Great Lakes. In the late eighties he was master of several merchant vessels and tugs, making voyages from south Florida to Haiti, up the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers and around the Caribbean and Gulf coast. Arriving in Charleston in May 2004, he worked three seasons as master of the 84’ three masted schooner Pride, until the vessel was sold. Recently, fortune again smiled on Captain Andrew and he was able to purchase the Pearson 530 Skipping Stone. Wintering the first year in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, he modernized the vessel's systems and prepared Skipping Stone for extended cruising. Now back at the helm of his own vessel, his seagoing experience and knowledge of the Caribbean can offer you a unique and memorable sailing experience.

Nikki, First Mate of the S/V Skipping Stone

The crew of the skipping stone

Nikki's love of experiencing new things and adventuring far from her rural Connecticut roots, make her the perfect partner for the salty Captain Andrew.

Growing up in rural Connecticut, Nikki was raised around horses which cultivated her love of the outdoors and nature. Competing in eventing competitions for more than 10 years, several of which she held a working student position for a well respected trainer, has shaped her work ethic and desire to learn.

Nikki's passion for sailing began with a 1500 nautical mile ocean voyage to the Virgin Islands via Bermuda from Newport, RI. Taken by the cruising lifestyle, her enthusiasm has only grown. Her joy is almost tangible, and certainly quite infectious, when the sails are up and the engine turned off. Interested in learning all systems on the boat and eventually becoming a captain herself, she can be found anywhere from the very top of the mast inspecting the rigging, to the engine room performing maintenance, or the bottom of the keel knocking off barnacles. Her love of experiencing new things and adventuring far from her rural Connecticut roots, make her the perfect partner for the salty Captain Andrew.

Easygoing and always armed with a bright smile, Nikki makes friends with just about everyone she meets. Making you feel at home and comfortable aboard Skipping Stone is her priority in life, as she takes great pleasure in the happiness of others. She would be delighted to take you snorkeling and show you the creatures hidden among the reefs or help capture your Caribbean experience on camera.
